FAQ

Frequently asked questions

›What is Fnav?

A file browser for Mac. It does what Finder does, with sorting that works, a home page with every drive, settings for each folder, tabs and two panes.

›Does Fnav replace Finder?

No. Fnav runs next to Finder and never quits or hides it.

›Which edition should I get?

If you like buying from the Mac App Store, get the Store edition. If you want the few extras the App Store does not allow, such as opening folders from other apps in Fnav, get the Full edition. The pricing page compares them.

›Does Fnav write files into my folders?

No. Fnav keeps its settings in its own database on your Mac. It never writes hidden files such as .DS_Store into your folders.

›Do I need an account?

For the Full edition, yes: the license lives on your account. You sign in with your email and a one time code. For the Store edition, only if you want to sync settings between Macs.

›Does it work offline?

Yes. The Full edition checks its license on your Mac without the internet. It needs to connect once in a while to renew a subscription.

›What does the app send over the internet?

A daily ping with a random install id, the edition and the versions; the license check; your settings if you turn on sync; and bug reports when you send one. Never file names or contents. The privacy page has the details.

›Which macOS do I need?

macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
